Case Study:

Maternity Unit Expansion at West Middlesex University Hospital – Middlesex, United Kingdom

West Middlesex University Hospital expanded their entire Maternity Department by 50% utilising phased modular facility projects and flexible hire packages.

The maternity unit extension was designed with two key objectives in mind: to maximise the available space on site and to create a relaxing environment within the natural birthing centre for both mother and baby.

Consideration for patient comfort was of extreme importance to the Trust and, through a close working relationship, we were able to develop a design which achieved the home away from home feel the Trust had envisioned.

Additionally, the use of appropriate external cladding created a sympathetic design which remained in keeping with the existing maternity unit.

Four large modular facilities were integrated at eight locations throughout the maternity unit, maximising the available space of site.

The site layout and arrangement of the facilities presented us with a complicated delivery, requiring a variety of installation techniques including both horizontal and vertical extensions, and installing modules directly onto steel posts.

To achieve the tight 24-week programme, with over 40 modules being installed, expertly efficient project management and diligent planning were required to ensure each delivery and install was successful and on time.

We delivered the facility without any major capital outlay thanks to flexible hire contracts from our procurement partner business, ModuleCo Healthcare.

West Middlesex University Hospital now have a state-of-the-art maternity unit which dramatically increased their capacity, whilst providing a comforting environment for those that need the gentlest of care.
